Blog topic: New Embryo Transfer Guidelines
As OB. GYN. News (Johnson K, September 2009) also reports, ASRM is planning to publish, less than a year after publication of the last guidelines, an update on how many embryos should be transferred at various female ages and in different clinical conditions.
This unusually quick update is, of course, a consequence of the California octuplet disaster, though we hope that it will be a well thought-out response and not just a politically correct knee-jerk reaction, following poor European example.
CHR’s opinion about the concept of single embryo transfer (s-ET) is well known (two examples here and here) and will, therefore, not be repeated here. We here just want to make the point that, just because one, quite obviously poorly informed, physician in California, does something stupid, does not mean that the whole field of IVF has to be reorganized.
In all of this discussion, we always have to remember that our patients have IVF pregnancy expectations and that our first obligation is to meet those (of course, with appropriate safety margins). We sincerely hope that political correctness at ASRM will not result in new guidelines, which will adversely affect the unmatched pregnancy outcomes U.S. patients have been enjoying.
