Blog topic: The impact of the economy
Like everywhere else, the economy is, of course topic number one. The current recession to a very significant degree also affects infertility services. Universally, fewer new patients present to fertility centers, cancellations are way up, while treatment cycles and medication purchases are down.
But the picture is not homogenous: Because especially older women, or women with premature aging ovaries, often have only limited time left, they do not have time to delay treatments (i.e. “the ticking time bomb” or “biological clock”). In contrast, once they know that they no longer can conceive with their own eggs, and are in need of egg donation, time no longer is of essence, and treatments, therefore, are frequently delayed.
An important consequence was, therefore, missed when media recently reported on soaring egg donor applications since the economy has tanked: the demand for egg donation cycles is significantly down, while, paradoxically, at the same time, egg donor applications are way up. Like everywhere else in the economy, it is all about timing!
