There is - for once - good news for New Yorkers: New York state is the 10th state to now mandate insurance coverage for IVF. As the 6th state to do so, NY state is also mandating insurance coverage for fertility preservation in young cancer patients. Both are welcome developments, as they mean more access to IVF for the general population and especially patients who are less economically well-off.
Starting in 2020, the NY state budget will include funds for both mandates by providing coverage for all medically necessary fertility preservation procedure by all commercial insurers and for IVF coverage by all large health plans. This leaves a few loopholes for non-coverage but represents a significant improvement over where the state has been. One can only hope that this commitment will be upheld for the long-run, and will not be sacrificed first in the next round of budget cuts.
