In the February issue of the VOICE, CHR announced Initiation of a new Ovarian Rejuvenation Research Study. Natalie Rahhal from the British DailyMail.com picked up on the announcement, and published a full-length article titled, “Hope for pregnancy after menopause with ‘ovarian rejuvenation’ which involves poking the organs with needles.” In this article she quoted extensively from a lengthy interview with CHR’s David H. Barad, MD, MS, who had filled her in on the hypothesis behind the study and the practical issues that arise in conducting such a study.
As we noted in last month’s VOICE, the term “ovarian rejuvenation” has been greatly abused by some centers, which have started to offer all kinds of unverified treatments under at times highly exaggerated claims. Also worrisome, quoted costs for patients are at times truly bizarre. It is, therefore, important to once again note that what CHR will be offering will be a prospectively randomized and registered study, in which patients will not be charged for the procedure itself, though they will still be responsible for the costs associated with IVF treatment.
CHR is preparing a clinical trial of ovarian rejuvenation for POF patients, utilizing platelet rich plasma (PRP). The study will initiate in April, and we expect participation criteria to become available in a few weeks. Study participants will need to undergo at least one cycle of ovarian stimulation after the ovarian rejuvenation procedure. The procedure itself will be free of charge to study participants. Normal costs associated with IVF cycles, including cancellation fees, will be the participants' responsibility.
