Am I a Candidate for Egg Donation?
Egg donation is a fertility treatment where a fertile woman donates her eggs to help another woman conceive.
The egg donation process consists of harvesting multiple eggs during a surgical procedure from the donor, fertilizing the eggs in a laboratory (in vitro fertilization, or IVF) and then implanting the embryos into the recipient’s uterus. The embryos can be implanted immediately after the procedure or frozen for later use.
This assistive reproductive technology is incredibly beneficial for women who can’t conceive with their eggs.
Norbert Gleicher, MD, FACOG, FACS, David Barad, MD, MS, FACOG, and members of our team offer this service for both donors and recipients at the Center for Human Reproduction located on the Upper East Side of New York, New York.
Here, we explain the screening process for egg donors and who benefits from egg donation.
Who qualifies to donate eggs?
At Center for Human Reproduction, we have an extensive screening process for those who wish to donate their eggs. In fact, we only accept 1-3% of all applicants. However, we want all of our egg donors to know that we highly value their donations, and we seek to treat all who want to donate with the utmost care and respect.
These are some of the criteria that you’ll need to meet to be considered a candidate for egg donation:
- You’re between the ages of 21-29
- You don’t have infections, such as hepatitis C or HIV
- You don’t carry a risk of genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis
- You can provide an accurate and detailed personal and family medical history
We also do extensive medical testing along with multiple interviews and a physical exam to ensure that egg donation is right not only for you but also for our fertility patients.
Who qualifies for donated eggs?
So often women are unnecessarily pressured into egg donation, so we consider egg donation to be a last resort, especially since we have such a high success rate in helping women conceive with their own eggs.
However, we also understand that donor eggs offer a much higher success rate, particularly if you have one of the following conditions:
- Premature ovarian failure due to early onset menopause
- Low-quality eggs because of diminished ovarian reserve
- Genetic diseases that could be passed onto the child
- Previous history of failed IVF cycles due to low-quality eggs
If you decide that egg donation is the fertility treatment you’d like to use, we give you access to our egg donation database so you can choose eggs that match the exact criteria you’re looking for.
