The COVID-19 Pandemic Through the Eyes of a NYC Fertility Center: September CHR VOICE
After a two-month break, we are very pleased to offer here the first issue for the 2020/2021 academic year of CHR’s VOICE. Because after almost half a year the COVID-19 pandemic, still, represents the _central issue this country and most of the world is facing, we are completely dedicating this issue of the _VOICE to this subject. We are doing this in an unprecedented way by offering our readership a fully referenced preprint of a manuscript, researched and fully referenced by CHR’s Medical Director and Chief Scientist, Norbert Gleicher, MD which, because of the immediate clinical relevance of some of the material, will be available to whoever is interested.
This manuscript evolved out of two independent developments; First, because CHR, in contrast to most other infertility center in the U.S. and Europe, never closed during the pandemic, CHR’s clinicians and investigators often had to apply instantly new knowledge that was published. They, therefore, were forced to closely follow the evolving literature, even though papers, mostly, appeared outside of the reproductive medicine literature. In that process, CHR’s investigators gained certain insights into the SARS-CoV-2 virus that had not been published before and are here in this manuscript for the first time presented in print. The second incentive for this manuscript was an invitation Dr. Gleicher received to present over the Internet a talk to a worldwide audience of IVF centers, describing the experiences of CHR, as a fully functioning IVF center even during peaks of the pandemic in New York City (NYC) and the political unrest that followed [LINK]. The strong response to this presentation, then encouraged the manuscript. We, of course, welcome comments about the manuscript, which at time of this pre-publication has not been peer-reviewed yet. They should be sent to ykizawa@thechr.com
Because of the importance of quick dissemination of new knowledge regarding COVID-19, most medical journals, in an exceptional gesture, allow public pre-posting of manuscripts without disqualifying them from later, more formal publication after peer review. Read the manuscript here.
