Factors to Consider Related to IVF Cost

Factors to Consider Related to IVF Cost

IVF can quickly become a costly investment, especially for a family who had not originally considered that they might need it. At CHR, we are dedicated to ensuring that you understand where every one of your fertility treatment dollars is going, with full pricing transparency and several income-based discount programs and military discounts for IVF.

Though it may be tempting to choose an IVF center based on who offers the lowest price for an IVF cycle, consider that choosing a less intensive program (like mini IVF) or a less qualified center can often end up costing you more in the long run. Worse, ineffective treatments can cause critical delays in your family-building journey. Doing IVF right the first time and having the baby to take home right away can be more cost-effective and far less stressful than repeating IVF cycles to achieve the same pregnancy, especially since your ovarian reserve and egg quality decreases over time.

When planning to undergo IVF, begin by doing your research:

  • Understand the Process - As a patient and consumer of IVF and other fertility services, it’s important to understand the IVF process, associated treatments (ICSI, PGS/PGT-A, etc.), supplements or prescriptions that are typically needed, as well as any travel or lifestyle expenses associated with IVF. At CHR, we assign all of our patients a personal clinical coordinator who can explain treatments, describe procedures, answer questions, and help you to plan out the costs associated with treatment.
  • Don’t Look for a “Deal”- All IVF centers are not the same when it comes to pricing. When presented with a particularly low IVF pricing, it’s important to ask the center what’s included, what isn’t, and consider that a seemingly “inexpensive” IVF cycle cost elsewhere may have lower chances of success than at CHR, leading to a higher overall cost in total when the patient must ultimately repeat her cycle in order to have the actual baby to go home with. When it comes to fertility treatments, cost of a treatment modality should be considered alongside its expected success rate.
  • Insurance Coverage for IVF - If you have insurance coverage, this can make all the difference when undergoing IVF. Call your insurance provider to learn what your plan covers and investigate what insurance plans are accepted by your chosen clinic. For example, in New York state, insurance providers are mandated to provide coverage for diagnostic workup and certain procedures (but not IVF itself), although employers who self-insure are exempt from this requirement. If you have any questions about making the most of your insurance coverage while undergoing IVF, our staff at CHR are available for questions and concerns. For patients with out-of-network insurance coverage, CHR provides itemized receipts that patients can submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement.
  • Scientific Evidence for Treatment - Many IVF centers try to sell you on an additional treatment, procedure, test or supplement with scant scientific evidence that they improve the outcomes. This is an unfortunate development in recent years in the “fertility industry,” as we have described in our newsletter articles. CHR is different. CHR’s advice to all of our patients regarding treatment and testing recommendations are based on our expert physicians’ thorough assessment of the scientific evidence. For example, we do not recommend routine PGS/PGT-A, a genetic screening that can add $3,500 to the already high IVF cycle cost without proven outcome benefit.
  • You Aren’t Alone At CHR- Remember not to get overwhelmed by the options available. Our physicians and billing specialists will work together to clarify IVF costs for you, and help you make the best decision for you and your family, financially and clinically. . CHR also offers a number of discount programs for patients in different situations.

Why Individualization is Crucial

CHR's David Barad, MD discusses why individualization is crucial in order to achieve the highest IVF success rates.

Income-based IVF Discount Programs

The CHR offers special discount IVF programs for patients who do not have insurance coverage. We may,on occasion, also offer access to free infertility medications. We strive to make the cost of IVF treatment affordable and accessible to everyone, while maintaining our high IVF success rates.

If you don’t have insurance coverage for IVF, and your place of residence is within the United States, CHR offers three special discounted IVF cycle rates. If any of these situations apply to you, see below for the appropriate category for discount details:

  • Uninsured and gross family income not over $50,000: One IVF cycle will cost $10,440
  • Uninsured and gross family income not over $75,000: One IVF cycle will cost $11,600
  • Uninsured and gross family income not over $100,000: One IVF cycle will cost $12,550

Please note that these discounted rates include only the basics of an IVF cycle and do not include extra services that may be required in certain IVF cycles. To be more specific, the following IVF services are included and excluded, respectively:

Included:

  • Pre-retrieval cycle monitoring with ultrasounds and bloods
  • Oocyte (egg) retrieval (excluding anesthesia costs)
  • Embryo transfer

Excluded:

  • All medications (we at times receive medications from pharmaceutical companies, which, if available, are offered to our patients free of charge)
  • All diagnostic pre-testing for female and male partner
  • All medical care required as consequences of unexpected medical complications, inclusive of hospital care
  • Anesthesia ($600.00 is paid to an independent anesthesiologist)
  • Special IVF add-on procedures, such as:
    • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
    • Assisted zona hatching (AZH)
    • Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
    • Gender selection
    • Cryopreservation (freezing) of embryos
    • Subsequent transfer of frozen/thawed embryos

Conditions:

In consideration of economic hardships, and in recognition of the considerable expenses of infertility treatments, CHR extends to uninsured patients these programs with the special discounted fee schedules described in the links above. Please note that this and any other discount programs we offer do not apply to patients from overseas. By accepting one of these discounted fee schedules, patients confirm that their annual gross income does not exceed the specified limits and that they have no insurance coverage and will not apply for reimbursement from any third party payer for services provided by CHR. In addition, as these discounted rates are not offered in the presence of insurance coverage, we will not provide an itemized billing, but a summary financial statement.

Other Discount Fertility Treatment Programs at CHR

CHR also offers a few other types of discount fertility treatment programs:

  • To active-duty military families, we offer IVF military discount.
  • Women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) who know they’ll likely need more than one one IVF cycle to achieve a pregnancy may consider participating in our multiple IVF cycle program.
  • For women considering freezing their eggs in more than one cycles, multiple egg freezing cycle program reduces the cost of egg freezing greatly.
  • Patients who need egg donation but would like to reduce the cost of egg donation, EcoDEP, our frozen donor egg program, may be worth a consideration. EcoDEP offers fewer egg donors to choose from than fresh/standard egg donor program, at a lower cost.
